It's that time of the month again- Date night. This is a great reason to go to restaurants I like and to treat my missus. Off to Berners Tavern we went and ready and hopeful for a lovely meal. As a special treat and on a Monday night we started off with a cocktail. Gin for Laura, Tequila for me. Herbs, grapefruit and alcohol- good start. I have been to Social Eating House, and based on reviews and word of mouth I was expected a lot but not as much as there. The venue is amazing, an old hotel building renovated and given a very fancy feel. in itself it is a beauty. Starter above, I went for the crispy pigs head with black pudding. It was very tasty and nice to try but this with Laura's mackerel were not outstanding. Jason Atherton has set his own standards too high so as nice as this was I wanted more. The Mackeral was very basic and did not get me excited. it was fresh and flaky (important for fish) but nothing that special. The main courses for us both did step up the game. Rib Eye steak and Lamb Rump. The steak was a star and at £33 you do expect it to be too. Smokey, cooked medium rare and tender too was all I needed and asked for. The lamb was very much the same, but replace the smokey flavour with a delicate freshness and the pesto which accompanied it added a nice touch. By this stage I was very stuffed. But we went for a desert to share and the menu didn't seem too appealing to me. This stuffed eclair was okay and the salted caramel ice cream was too salty for me. As a ending to a fancy meal it wasn't up there. The amazing treatment and desert at social eating house totally eclipsed this but all in all a good night.
One Liner: Fancy dinner but slightly overpriced. Address: The London Edition Hotel, 10 Berners St, London W1T 3LF Phone: 020 7908 7979
