I started the day off wishing for a Hull win. My friends and the like will know that I'm a hater. Keep Up. But at the end of the whistle and a straight forward 3-2 win Arsenal have won the FA Cup. Congratulations.
This victory was so, so important for the Gunners and not just to beat Hull but to finally get the monkey off their back. The large empty space at the Emirates since 2005 had become a burden for the club which had threatened to belittle all the work that Wenger had put in since joining Arsenal. A few years ago Wenger had stated that coming fourth was like a trophy in itself, this was mocked and rightly so. The reaction of the players and fans at the stadium are proof enough that this wasn't fourth place. My friends statuses on Facebook added to this and I hope the fans enjoy it the most. This was for you and very much needed. If you are unappreciative of this then look down the road and think about being a Spurs fan. The lack of success there has led to constant changes and a club whose future is uncertain.
I'm a Liverpool fan and will always look to parallels with my club. 2012 Liverpool won the carling cup and although it is not the best trophy it gave the fans something to celebrate and something tangible. I work at a trade body and membership is what I do. We are all members of our clubs in the way we are loyal and support them, therefore we want tangible benefits and a trophy is this. Fourth place is this and Bill Shankly said it best,"If you are first you are first. If you are second you are nothing".
Winning a trophy is becoming first. Winners of a competition and after beating Tottenham, Liverpool and Everton to get to the final then lifting the FA Cup is nothing to turn your nose up at. The victory for Liverpool in 2012 I believe has eventually set us up to a close title challenge in 2014 and now the hope of a successful challenge next year is very realistic. Winning is a habit and this is ultimately what players such as Ozil, Carzola, Ramsey and Wilshere want. A trophy is what the fans want too and you don't get anything for finishing second, the bragging rights aren't even that great.
Fair enough, you get the financial incentives and all the extra money but getting into the champions league only guarantees six more games. The victory parade today in north London, highlights the importance of the win and i know that the fans will thoroughly enjoy the day in Holloway. It seems that the last nine years being in the champions league has been something that Arsenal haven't really been able to handle and may have contributed to previous final losses to Chelsea and Birmingham in the Carling Cup.
The important thing here is that the fans and the players enjoy being winners and try and make it a habit. This group of players does not have this winning habit, like Adams, Viera and Henry, but it has to start from somewhere. Along with this, I hope the fans frustrations ease off with this result as it is what you wanted and needed. Let's hope it is not another nine years which you have to wait.
