Le Bab brings you Kebabs from around the world in one place. Shawarma, Doner Kebabs and Rolls. All sounds like a dream come true.
Located in Kingley Court, off Carnaby Street, Le Bab on the third floor opens its doors to all. A small venue, which requires you to get there early or book in advance, Le Bab classes itself as a gourmet kebab house, where they make all their food from scratch. With seasonality an importance of Le Bab, we were able to sample a different menu from others. This meant that the lamb kebab that my friend recommended was not on the menu. However, he missed out on the Pork I had and likewise, I have missed out on the Scotch Kofte they have now. There definitely is a Meditteranean vibe about Le Bab
Quick starters and then a kebab. That is the way to go about ordering here and what to eat.
The starters (small dishes) are all appetising in their own way and make you feel a bit lost as to what cuisine is here. There definitely is a Meditteranean vibe about Le Bab, with food cooked over charcoal and the fact that they do kebabs. Ingredients and dishes, such as pomegranate, date "brown sauce" for their kofte and pastilla, all give you a warm feel. You try to transport yourself to a nice sunny beach in Turkey or Dubai; with dishes being served by the waiter to share with friends and family. The restaurant in Kingley court is designed to get as many people in as possible. It is not too squeezed but cozy enough to see what everyone else is eating and get food envy, every so often. Try reading the menu without drooling
The doughnut was a new dish for me and this was filled with spiced chicken liver parfait, peanuts and a molasses glaze. Oh my. A great idea, just a shame it is so small as just when you start to enjoy it, it's gone.
The cauliflower spiced pastilla was okay, a nice yoghurt on the side to dip these cripsy rolls in, but nothing that stood out for me. Looking at their menu again, I would go for the Scotch Kofte and endive salad instead. The kebabs are the main attraction and the stars of the show here. The starters are just that and as a supporting act, do a good job of getting you ready and hyped up. The description of both are below. Try reading the menu without drooling or wanting it RIGHT NOW: 15-Hourfree range PORK SHAWARMA KEBAB "Grilled spring onion, roasted broccoli puree, fennel pickle, crackling, chermoula mayo" Herdwich LAMB ADANA KEBAB "Yellow courgettes, soused rainbow radish, pea yoghurt and date chutney" Did it live up to the hype- OH YES! The combination on both of flavours, textures, spices and heat, marry so well together. You want a bit of everything in each bite and get it. The wraps form a perfect vessel for transporting all the goodness into your mouth. Although it can get a bit messy (of course, it's a kebab), the tray underneath ensures that you can gobble it up later. Good meat is key and here they provide it. The guests of yellow courgettes, radish, fennel pickle and crackling all work so well. Seasonality is key and I cannot wait to try new dishes from Le Bab. Get in there early or just book in advance. An hour and a half and the good times are all yours. Le Bab and gourmet kebabs are the dreams of every late night reveler.
