Christmas Lunch and it's fifteen degrees outside. What the...!
Slightly warmer weather and by the river, off we went to Sea Containers at the Mondrian Hotel. A great location on the South bank and avoiding the rain, the location and venue are a great sight for both Londoners and tourists. Now here was hoping that the food would match.
A busy menu, but one that screamed "EAT ME', "share me" and "indulge". From the starters which we were recommended to share such as Ceviche and Barruta to the sharing main courses of Pork Chop and Rib Eye Steak.
As a group we went for the starters to share amongst the group and these were padron peppers- drenched in salt, a Burrata (cheese on bread with some romesco), ceviche and oven Lamb roasted Meatballs. As a whole these were tasty but nothing really stood out for me. The lamb meatballs were a bit dry and tough with the crispy exterior being more hard than crunchy and the soft inside being a bit dry too. The ceviche which was with bream, brill and prawns was tasty but not enough to share between six people. The corn nuts added good texture to the dish. In terms of a stand out ceviche, this won't be in my top five but it was tasty.
For main course, we avoided the Sharing options such as the Rb-Eye Steak or Pork chop. My appetite was fancying steak, so i went for the Seared Onglet Steak. This came on top of a bed of Braised Short rib, some Swiss chard (it is not cheese) and some cherry tomatoes.
The steak was a highlight for me. Cooked medium rare and charred well all round it was lovely. The jus which covered the steak added more depth to the steak and provided a good main course. I tasted some of the cod (pictured above) as well as the chicken main course and these two were tasty dishes. So it is a thumbs down for the starters and a definite thumbs up for the main course. Dessert- besides the presentation of the tiramisu this was also a thumbs down. Very creamy but lacking any real quality. It seemed like the strong flavours you expect from a traditional tiramisu never really materialised and it was all over very quickly.
Bloggable, edible and a nice lunch had at Sea Containers. I'm glad i went and the view was decent enough. I think for the price and the location, better could be had. With such occassions you want for the meal to stand out, all of it and not just one part, so the fact that 1 out of 3 was a success is not a great sign.
Merry Christmas to you all.
